William Penn School District Placed on the College Board’s Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll for Expanding Access to College
Penn Wood High School in the William Penn School District is responsible for earning the district a place on the Honor Roll. Dr. D. Brandon Cooley has been Principal of Penn Wood High School for five years. “I knew the potential was there for a long time. It was a matter of organizing our resources to give our students the best opportunity to reflect their abilities so others could see what was innate all along. Not only do we have high achievers who are continuing to improve, but we have students who may not have previously been willing to challenge themselves stand up to take the academic opportunities we provide for them. Clearly, this is reflected in this honor,” Cooley said.Districts on the Honor Roll demonstrated significant and consistent growth in the number of underrepresented students and students from lower-income backgrounds participating in AP®, taking the SAT®, and applying to four or more colleges.
“The Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll recognizes educators and administrators who excel in delivering opportunity to students,” said David Coleman, president and CEO of the College Board. “By increasing access to stimulating courses and college opportunity, they have created a culture of success that will continue to grow and benefit students.
