Community Letter: Budget Update – July 15, 2024

Dear WPSD Community,

I am writing to provide an important update regarding our district’s 2024-2025 budget situation. We are pleased  that Pennsylvania lawmakers have passed a $47.6 billion state budget and that Governor Josh Shapiro signed it into law on July 11th. This news comes nearly two weeks into the new fiscal year and allows us to move forward with more certainty.

Although the budget has finally passed, we are disappointed that it does not fully meet the funding levels recommended by the Basic Education Funding Commission (BEFC) and that was included in Governor Shapiro’s proposed budget. The legislation provides about $900 million more for public school instruction and special education, representing a 9% increase. However, the budget falls short of the $6.2 billion increase phased in over five years that was sought by us and our fellow plaintiffs that sued for fair funding and won our case in court. This means we will still face challenges in fully meeting the needs of our students and staff.

We are currently reviewing the budget and examining the possibilities and limitations moving forward. We plan on presenting our updated budget plan at the Board Business Meeting on July 22. We are pleased that we are able to move forward with many of our plans, but unfortunately, we will not be able to fund everything that we need to, due to the state budget funding.

We remain focused on the education, safety, and potential of our students. Our district will continue to prioritize:

Educational Excellence: Providing high-quality instruction and support for all students, despite budget constraints.
Safety and Security: Ensuring a safe learning environment for our students and staff.
Student Potential: Supporting the diverse needs and aspirations of our students, helping them to achieve their full potential.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we navigate these challenges. Together, we will work to ensure the best possible outcomes for our students and our community. Thank you for your commitment to our district and our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Becoats
