Letter to WPSD Families and Community

Lansdowne, PA – February 6, 2024

Dear WPSD Community:

We are deeply saddened to inform you that one of our Penn Wood High School students was pronounced deceased on Monday, February 5, 2024. As we wish to respect the family’s privacy, we are not providing further information.

Our heartfelt condolences are with the student’s family and friends during this tragic time. We shared this information with our high school staff and students this morning, and assured them that supports are in place and available for anyone who needs them.

The death of a child is always a sad and troubling event that can often have a profound effect on the student’s friends and classmates. It is extremely important for children to have an opportunity to talk through their feelings and reactions in an age-appropriate manner. Over the next few days, we recommend that you encourage your child to talk about how they are feeling while you listen attentively to what they’re saying and watch their behaviors.

Please know that we are here to help your family through this grief and have many supports available. We strongly encourage you to reach out to your school principal should you require additional support or if you have any concerns regarding your child’s reaction to this loss.

I sincerely thank you for your concern and thoughts during this difficult time. Please keep the student’s family and friends in your thoughts.

With sincere appreciation,

Dr. Becoats
Superintendent
