PWHS Hosts Fair Funding Press Conference on September 26, 2024

Lansdowne, PA – October 6, 2024

On September 10, 2023, State Representative and House Appropriations Committee Chair Jordan Harris and State Representative and Education Committee Chairman Peter Schweyer kicked off their Pennsylvania Education Tour with a hearing at Penn Wood High School. As the Commonwealth Supreme Court ruled in February 2023 that the funding of schools in Pennsylvania was unconstitutional, the directive was given to the legislature to rectify this.

Rep. Harris returned to Penn Wood High School on September 26, 2024 to hold a press conference to celebrate the passing of the state budget this past July with the increased funds for public education. He was joined by WPSD superintendent Dr. Eric Becoats, who opened the conference with his remarks, school board director Jennifer Hoff, and 11th grade student Gabriel Beckett. Other speakers included State Representatives Joanna McClinton, Gina Curry, Regina Young, and Heather Boyd. In attendance were Penn Wood High School students representing the student council and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.

This event marked a significant moment in the ongoing battle for fair funding for public schools across Pennsylvania. Although great strides have been made, there is still work to be done.

Superintendent Dr. Eric Becoats highlighted the journey: “Today, we reflect on the progress made with the passage of the new state budget, which increases K-12 education funding by over $1 billion. While this is a critical step, it does not yet meet the full recommendations for fair funding. The Commonwealth Supreme Court’s ruling was a victory, but it is only the beginning. We must continue fighting for the full resources our students deserve.”

Penn Wood High School junior Gabriel Beckett, a proud student leader, added: “Without proper funding, it’s like trying to build a house with no foundation—it’s possible, but it’s a struggle. This budget is that foundation. It would mean safer buildings, modern classrooms, and more opportunities for all students to thrive.”

Ms. Jennifer Hoff agreed: “While it says ‘we do more with less’ on our gym floor, we refuse to have that mindset. We know what our young people need to be successful, we should be able to move without impediment to provide a 21st Century Education to our 6 communities.”

A special thanks to all who attended, including our elected officials and especially our students and staff. Together, we will continue to push forward, ensuring that all schools throughout Pennsylvania receive the fair funding needed to provide the best education for every student.
