Lansdowne, PA – September 18, 2024
Dear WPSD Families and Community Members,
Back-to-school time is filled with excitement as students reconnect with friends, begin new learning adventures, and look forward to a year of growth. However, it is also a time when concerns about safety can arise, especially with the growing nation-wide trend of threats and rumors circulating on social media. Unfortunately, these posts often spread quickly, leading to unnecessary fear, confusion, and frustration.
We want to address these concerns directly. Recently, unfounded rumors have been shared within our community, causing alarm. While we understand how easily these messages can spread, it is crucial that we all work together to prevent the harm they cause. Rumors and false threats not only disrupt the school day but can also lead to serious consequences, including disciplinary actions and legal repercussions.
We ask that you please talk to your children about the dangers of spreading rumors. Encourage them to report any direct information they hear regarding potential threats to a trusted adult—whether that be a teacher, a school administrator, or the local authorities—rather than sharing it with peers. This helps ensure that appropriate action can be taken without causing unnecessary panic.
In response to the concerns raised, our district is taking the following steps:
- Collaboration with Local Authorities: We are working closely with local law enforcement to investigate any and all threats. If necessary, we will release joint communications with the police, underscoring the seriousness of these situations.
- Clear Consequences: Students found to be spreading false information will face disciplinary action. In extreme cases, charges may be filed, as interfering with a public school day is a serious offense.
- Transparency in Communication: While we understand the desire for timely information, we will prioritize accurate and verified communication. We will notify you of any credible threats promptly and provide updates as necessary.
It is vital for our entire community to work together to keep our schools safe. We appreciate your support in discussing this important issue with your children and helping them understand the serious repercussions of spreading rumors.
Thank you for your continued partnership as we work to create a safe and positive environment for all our students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Becoats
