Lansdowne, PA – November 20, 2023
On November 20, 2023, Penn Wood High School – Green Avenue Campus celebrated the grand opening of Rap’s Athl-EATS, a new food and resource pantry dedicated to the memory of the late athletic director Rap Curry. The pantry was started by school social worker Joseph Cuff-Wright in partnership with Murphy’s Giving Market, Wegman’s food stores, and the Philadelphia Flyers.
Rap’s Athl-EATS will be student-led and provide students with access to food, hygiene products, and other essential resources. The pantry is a critical step in addressing food insecurity among Penn Wood High School students, ensuring that they have the nourishment they need to focus on their studies and extracurricular activities.
“We are excited to open Rap’s Athl-EATS and provide our students with the resources they need to succeed,” said Cuff-Wright. “Rap Curry was a dedicated leader and mentor to our students, and we are honored to dedicate this pantry to his memory.”
Students will be able to visit the pantry during lunch periods to pick up the items they need.
“We are proud to partner with Penn Wood High School to open this important resource for our community,” said Desireé LaMarr-Murphy, founder and CEO of Murphy’s Giving Market. “We believe that no child should go hungry, and we are committed to helping ensure that all students have access to the food and resources they need to thrive.”
PA State Representative, and wife of Rap Curry, Gina Curry spoke at the dedication ceremony. Curry stated that she is honored that her late husband’s legacy will continue to live on at the school and in the community that he cared about so deeply.
The opening of Rap’s Athl-EATS is a testament to the strong partnership between Penn Wood High School and the community. The pantry will provide much-needed support to students and families, and it will also serve as a lasting tribute to Rap Curry’s legacy of service to the school and the community.
