Lansdowne, PA – February 20, 2024
A new 54-foot mural at Hoffman Park in Lansdowne, PA, titled “Sports Legends of Lansdowne” celebrates the achievements of seven local sports heroes. Four of those heroes are Penn Wood High School graduates and have contributed to the social and cultural development of the area. The mural, painted by Eddie “E Gram” Graham, includes Dawn Burrell, Leroy Burrell, Rap Curry, and Afia Lewis. The mural was featured in a recent article by the Delco Times, which praised the artist and the subjects for their inspiring stories. Graham said the art is meant to provide exposure to the feats of the stellar athletes. The WPSD expressed its pride and gratitude for the recognition and the honor of having some of its members represented in such a beautiful way.
The seven athletes represented in the mural are Rap Curry, Eddie Coyle, Karen Anderson, Dawn Burrell, Leroy Burrell, Afia Lewis, and Eddie Collins Jr. Four of the athletes received medals in the Olympics: Dawn and Leroy Burrell, Anderson and Coyle. Lewis was a standout track athlete at Penn Wood and earned Hall of Fame honors at Temple University. The Burrells were standout athletes at Penn Wood and went on to become Olympic champions. Rap Curry was a standout basketball player at Penn Wood and St. Joseph’s University. He returned to Penn Wood to coach basketball and became the athletic director until his passing in July of 2023.
Graham, the artist, likes to use bright, bold, attention-grabbing colors with the goal of creating a sense of joy. He also hopes to replicate similar murals all around Delaware County.
