Lansdowne, PA (April 11, 2024) – The William Penn School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Leon Howard as the new Athletic Director of Penn Wood High School, following a thorough and extensive selection process. Leon steps into this role with a deep understanding of the importance of athletics in our district and community, as well as a commitment to upholding the legacy of excellence left by the late Rap Curry.
Rap’s sudden passing last July left a void in the William Penn School District community’s hearts and in our athletic programs. His contributions as a hall of fame basketball player, coach, teacher, mentor, and beloved athletic director were unparalleled. Rap’s impact extended far beyond the court; he was a pillar of our community, known for his passion, leadership, and dedication to helping others.
While Rap’s loss continues to be deeply felt, we are reminded of his spirit and the values he embodied—loyalty, caring, and faith. In welcoming Leon as our new Athletic Director, we honor Rap’s memory by selecting someone who shares his commitment to excellence, service, and passion for Penn Wood High School.
Leon is a 1990 graduate of Penn Wood High School where he won All-Delco honors for both basketball and track and field. He continued both sports at Lincoln University where he also received his BS in Business Administration and Management. He was an All-conference basketball player and a six time All-American triple jumper, and he was inducted into Lincoln University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.
Leon took that expertise and passion as an athlete into his work in the community as a coach, organizer, and leader. His extensive experience demonstrates his ability to develop successful teams and manage dynamic programs, making him an ideal candidate for this role. As President, Executive Director, and Basketball Commissioner of the Yeadon Education Athletic Association (YEAA) since 2008, Leon has overseen the development and management of athletic and mentoring programs for over 600 student-athletes annually, ranging from ages 5 to 18. His leadership has been instrumental in recruiting and supervising coaching personnel, creating comprehensive budgets, and securing financial operations through registration fees, grants, donations, and sponsorships.
Moreover, Leon’s tenure at Wells Fargo Bank showcases his proficiency in building lifelong relationships with customers while meeting their financial needs. As an Associate Personal Banker and Branch Small Business Advocate, he has demonstrated a commitment to providing personalized financial solutions and facilitating financial literacy workshops for nonprofit community organizations and local school districts.
Leon’s dedication to community involvement is evident through his extensive list of activities and achievements, including serving as a board member for the Yeadon Economic Development Corporation, involvement in various nonprofit organizations, and his contributions to mentoring and coaching youth sports. His passion for empowering youth and fostering positive relationships within the community aligns perfectly with the values upheld by the William Penn School District.
As we welcome Leon Howard to the William Penn School District family, we are confident that his leadership, expertise, and dedication will continue to uphold the legacy of excellence established by his predecessors. We look forward to the exciting contributions he will make to our athletic programs and the positive impact he will have on our students and community as a whole. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Leon as he takes on this important role. He will begin this role on Monday, April 29, 2024.
Stay tuned for further updates and announcements regarding Leon’s plans and initiatives for our athletic department.
