March Portrait of a Graduate Attribute: Effective Communicator

Lansdowne, PA – March 2, 2026

The William Penn School District’s Portrait of a Graduate attribute for March is Effective Communicator.

An Effective Communicator demonstrates professionalism and clarity in communication, adapting their message to different audiences and situations. Students develop this attribute by learning to share their ideas thoughtfully and listen carefully to others. Communication is more than speaking clearly. It also includes active listening, respectful dialogue, and the ability to express ideas with confidence and purpose.

As students move from kindergarten through graduation, strong communication skills support academic success, relationship-building, and future readiness. Whether participating in classroom discussions, collaborating with peers, presenting ideas, or resolving conflicts, students rely on effective communication every day.

Throughout the month, schools will continue integrating opportunities for students to reflect on how they express themselves and how they listen to others. The Portrait of a Graduate framework provides suggested activities that encourage students to think about clarity, tone, audience, and respect in communication. Students may engage in journaling, writing, storytelling, presentations, or classroom discussions that elevate student voice.

Families can support this attribute at home by encouraging open conversations, asking children to explain their thinking, and modeling thoughtful listening. Simple practices such as writing a thank you note, introducing oneself confidently, or discussing different perspectives help reinforce these important skills.

The Portrait of a Graduate serves as a shared roadmap for developing the skills and attributes that prepare students for success in school and beyond. Throughout the year, the William Penn School District remains committed to ensuring that every student grows not only academically, but also as a confident communicator, critical thinker, and engaged member of the community.
