Penn Wood High School and Chester High School will unite academics, culture, and athletics during their upcoming DelVal rivalry basketball game. The game will be on Thursday, January 15, at 7 p.m. at Penn Wood High School. This event is a collaboration between Athletic Directors Leon Howard (Lincoln University alumnus) and LaDontay Bell (Cheyney University alumnus). This event reflects WPSD’s commitment to college readiness and student success.
Purpose of the Event
The HBCU Theme Night integrates academic and cultural awareness into the local athletic rivalry. The initiative provides student-athletes, the student body, and the community with direct exposure to the history, traditions, and postsecondary opportunities available at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
What to Expect
The gymnasium lobby will feature a college-fair atmosphere where attendees can access:
– Brochures and QR codes detailing various HBCU programs.
– Information regarding admissions requirements, academic offerings, and campus life.
Community & Alumni Engagement
The event highlights the professional and social legacies of HBCUs through community participation:
– Alumni: Encouraged to attend wearing their institutional gear.
– Divine Nine: Members of Black Greek-letter organizations are invited to represent their fraternities and sororities.
Upcoming Girls’ Basketball HBCU Night
Plans are underway for a dedicated HBCU Theme Night for the girls’ basketball program, led by Head Coach Chanelle Harris and Assistant Coach Brittany Pope (both Lincoln University alumnae). Scheduling details will be announced in the near future.
