Lansdowne, PA – June 25, 2025
Representatives from the William Penn School District traveled to the state capital on June 24, 2025, to advocate for equitable funding for public schools across Pennsylvania. The trip, organized by Children First PA, brought together student representatives from the William Penn, Upper Darby, Chester Upland, and Philadelphia school districts, along with school board directors from each participating district and William Penn Superintendent Dr. Becoats, to meet with local elected officials at their offices within the Capitol building.
The purpose of these meetings was to voice concerns regarding the current public school funding structure in Pennsylvania and to seek clarification and answers on how the state plans to address these disparities. This visit comes in anticipation of the William Penn School District’s own budget, which will be voted on during a special board meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, at 6:30 p.m.
Discussions in Harrisburg focused on the impact of current funding levels on educational programs, resources, and student opportunities within their respective districts. School board directors provided insights into the financial challenges faced by their districts and the crucial need for a funding system that adequately supports all public schools.
The timing of this advocacy effort highlights the immediate and pressing need for state-level solutions to funding inequities as local districts finalize their own fiscal plans. Advocates emphasized that fair funding is essential to providing all students with the resources and opportunities necessary for academic success and future preparedness. Further engagement with state lawmakers on this critical issue is anticipated, particularly as districts like William Penn face significant budgetary decisions tied to state allocations.
