WPSD Announces Juneteenth Celebrations

Lansdowne, PAMay 29, 2026

The William Penn School District will host a series of educational programs and events to commemorate Juneteenth. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation. Observing this holiday in schools provides a vital opportunity to teach historical literacy, honor African American contributions, and reflect on the values of freedom and equality.

Event Schedule
District schools will host educational presentations and assemblies, culminating in a major public celebration:

June 2: Aldan Elementary
June 2: Bell Ave. Elementary
June 2: Colwyn Elementary

June 13: Juneteenth Honors Program, “Freedom Rebounded”, is open to the public and will take place at the Penn Museum, located at 3260 South Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104, at 10 a.m.

These events are made possible through a partnership with Philly Forum (the Philadelphia Forum for Faith, Law, and Civics), which provides financial support to the district for these celebrations.
