WPSD Honors a Century of Black History Commemorations

Lansdowne, PAFebruary 2, 2026

As February 2026 begins, the William Penn School District joins the national centennial celebration of Black History Month. This year’s theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations, marks 100 years since Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History Week in 1926. In recognition of this milestone, schools across the district will host presentations and interactive events celebrating the legacy and contributions of African Americans.

The district-wide schedule includes a variety of programs that bring history to life for students and the community, including “Living Blacks in Wax” museums, where students portray influential historical figures, and Divine 9 displays highlighting the history and impact of the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s historically Black Greek-letter organizations.

In addition, the district will host a Small Black Business Expo at Evans Elementary, spotlighting local Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs while fostering economic empowerment and community connection. Additional Black History Month activities are planned throughout the month. By blending historical reflection with modern celebration, WPSD honors Dr. Woodson’s vision of making Black history an essential and celebrated part of the American narrative.

William Penn School District encourages families and residents to participate in these meaningful tributes as we work together to protect and promote historical truth.
